Message from the Vice President and Vice Provost – Winter 2013

Happy New Year to our alumni and friends! Winter quarter is just underway and it offers a great opportunity to connect with you. We are pleased to share the most recent OMA&D news and keep you informed about what is happening on campus as we turn the corner into 2013.

The beginning of the New Year marks a significant milestone for OMA&D as we celebrate the opening of the newly renovated Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center. The design of the new center upholds the rich history of the original building that has served the UW community since 1972. And its new name honors the legacy of the late Dr. Kelly, OMA&D’s founding vice president and a pioneer for diversity at the UW. If you are not able to join us Jan. 11, for the campus opening we hope you will be able to pay a visit to the new center in the near future.

Coming up on Jan. 21 is the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Each year, OMA&D staff and students join both the campus and nation-wide efforts to honor the legacy of Dr. King by engaging in day of community service activities.

Be sure to save the date for May 16, when OMA&D and the Friends of the Educational Opportunity Program host the 43rd annual Celebration, Fête and Honors. This year, the event is back on campus at the new Husky Union Building (HUB). At Celebration, we honor the excellence of EOP students and the recipient of the Charles E. Odegaard Award.

This edition of eNews also highlights a few OMA&D events that took place in the fall, as well as the work of our outstanding alumni and students.

We want to hear your stories as well so please stay in touch. We continue to be grateful for the generosity of you, our alumni and friends, who make it possible for OMA&D to provide educational opportunity and access for students.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2013. I hope to see many of you in the coming year.

Sincerely,

Sheila Edwards Lange
