UW Students Competing for Title of Miss Seafair

Several UW students, including College Assistance Migrant Program peer mentor Veronica Quintero, are participating in the 2011 Seafair Scholarship Program for Women. A communication major who recently completed her second-year at UW, Quintero (Mattawa, Wash.) was crowned Miss Hispanic Seafair on May 21.

She will represent the Hispanic community in the competition which culminates with the coronation on Sat., July 30. Quintero is writing a blog to document her participation in the Seafair Scholarship Program for Women titled A Year in the Life: Miss Hispanic Seafair 2011.

The Seafair Scholarship Program for Women is designed to give young women the opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity of the Puget Sound region and enrich their lives through education, philanthropy, and community involvement.

Other current or recently graduated UW students participating in the program include Monica Kumar (Indian Community of Seattle), Frederica Miako Mackert (Japanese Community of Seattle), and Paulina Vongphet (Laotian Community, UW Bothell). Jamei June (North Seattle Community) will attend the UW this winter. The reigning 2010-11 Miss Seafair is UW student Kisara Nishimoto (Japanese Community of Seattle).

To become Miss Seafair, young women are judged on academics, public speaking, interview skills and creative expression. Over $20,000 in scholarships will be awarded. Throughout the summer, participants visit nearly 20 community events and festivals, as well as hospitals and retirement facilities.

The Seafair Royalty Tribute Luncheon was held on June 18 and the Creative Expressions and Community Service Presentations will take place at the Museum of Flight on July 14. The July 30 coronation will occur at 7 p.m. along the Seafair parade route, in the Westlake TV Zone and 4th Ave.
