Michigan Language Test (MLT) Test Information
The Michigan Language Test is in the process of being phased-out by the University of Washington. We will offer the test through September 30, 2009. After that date, there will be no further test administrations of the MLT.
Other English Language Proficiency Exam options include:
- International English Language Testing Service (IELTS)
- Academic English Language Program (AEP) Placement Test - for admitted UW students only
- Institutional ACT Assessment (IACT) Test - English-only version available
- TOEFL PBT

For University of Washington use ONLY
The Michigan Language Test, given by the University of Washington Testing Office, is for University of Washington current and prospective students only. The results will not be sent to any other institution.
| FEE: | The test fee is $60 (cash or check) for group tests (see schedule). The fee for an individual appointment is $90 (cash or check) If you are unable to take a group test, you may schedule an individual exam on a space-available basis. Individual appointments are NOT available on all days at all times. |
| REGISTRATION: | PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED in-person in Schmitz Hall, rm. 440 or by calling 206-543-1170. Register approximately two weeks in advance of the desired test date. Space is limited. |
| SCORES: | Results from the test are mailed to the examinee within two weeks after the test date. Scores are also sent to the UW Academic English Program, Undergraduate and Graduate Admissions Offices. The score you receive will be a scaled score out of a maximum of 100 points. If your score is 90 or above, you have satisfied the requirement for an exemption from the UW Academic English Program. |
| STUDY: | There may be a study guide for the MLT in the University Bookstore (please note that the UW does not use the composition section included with the national examination), or candidates may use TOEFL study materials, available at many local bookstores. |
| ON THE DAY OF THE TEST: | The examinee must bring picture identification (i.e. passport, state issued identification card), #2 pencils, and know her/his UW student ID number or social security number. No one will be admitted to the test without her/his picture identification. If you arrive after the scheduled test time, you will not be admitted to the examination. No aids are permitted during the test. You may not bring dictionaries, books, scratch paper, calculators, or notebooks with you on the day of the test. |
| RETESTS: | Retests may be taken 45 days after the examinee's most recent test date. |
