Foreign language Exams

TESTS: Arabic, Bulgarian, Czech, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian, Spanish, Ukrainian and Urdu.

If you are unsure whether you need a foreign language test, please consult UW Advising.

Foreign language exam fee is $45.00 per exam (except for first year placement exams offered during daily placement testing). Fees can be paid with cash or check only, make payable to the University of Washington.

ARABIC: Arabic placement exams are offered beginning two weeks after the end of spring quarter, up until two weeks before the beginning of autumn quarter (weekends excluded).  Exams will be graded after the exam period closes.  Students are advised to take the test as soon as they return from summer study abroad programs or elsewhere.

Purpose:
Used for UW students who have completed two years of Arabic and are seeking admission to ARABIC 431.

Purpose:

Purpose:
Used for UW students who wish to continue study of this language at the UW but are not certain which level of language they are most suited to begin with or UW students who want to fulfill the one-year foreign language graduation requirement or UW applicants who need to fulfill a UW foreign language admission deficiency. Additional Information:

Take 100-level exam

  • If you know the Korean alphabet and basically know how to read, and grew up hearing your parents/relatives speaking Korean
  • If you attended Korean weekend schools and learned how to read Korean during your childhood

Take 200-level exam

  • If you attended school in Korea for any amount of time
  • If you are trying to prove proficiency through the second year level of a language using Korean (e.g. your major has such a language requirement)
  • If you took formal Korean classes at a high school, Saturday school, or at another college or university and can read Korean with relative fluency
  • If you know how to read (whether you learned to read by yourself or from a friend/parent) and think that you know the language but your spelling is very bad

This is a two-part test (written and oral); the written test is offered only at the following times:
FALL: 1st week of quarter - end of 4th week of quarter (no exceptions)
WINTER: 1st week of quarter - end of 4th week of quarter (no exceptions)
SPRING: 1st week of quarter - end of 4th week of quarter (no exceptions)
SUMMER: NO SUMMER TESTING

After the student has taken the written exam and the Slavic Department has received the paper test from the Testing Center, the Slavic Department will contact the student by email to schedule the oral examination.

Written portion of test takes 2 hours. Reading passages with questions, short answer, fill in blanks and translation. Retest Policy: Department permission.
