Academic Placement Testing Program (APTP)
The Academic Placement Testing Program (APTP) is a cooperative program of Washington State public baccalaureate institutions. Faculty from participating institutions have created the Mathematics Placement Test (MPT) to help students, with the assistance of their academic advisers, select first-year mathematics courses for which they are best prepared. The program is managed by the Office of Educational Assessment on behalf of participating institutions. The test is not valid at any community college.
Test Levels
Students choose between two exams, depending on their mathematics background.
- The Intermediate Math Placement Test is intended for students who have less than three or four years of high school math. It consists of 35 items covering Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Precalculus I.
- The Advanced Math Placement Test is directed toward students who have taken at least three or four years of high school math. It consists of 30 items covering Intermediate Algebra and Precalculus I and II.
A set of practice problems has been developed to assist students in preparing for the test.
Test Sessions
The APTP establishes and coordinates a large number of Mathematics Placement test dates throughout the state during the months of May and June each year. Testing sessions are two hours long, including the one-hour time limit for the test itself. Calculators are not needed or allowed. Students must pre-register for the test online.
Out-of-state students should contact the institution offering admission for testing options.
Retesting
APTP statewide testing sessions are for first-time test takers ONLY. Students may test only once through the APTP statewide testing program. Should a student wish to retest, retesting must be done two (2) weeks after the original test date AND on a walk-in basis at one of the participating university campus testing centers. Please contact the university campus testing center closest to you for a test schedule.
Attempts to take the test more than once during the statewide sessions will not be honored and fees will not be refunded or transferred.
