History - University of Washington

Research

In fiscal year 2002, the University of Washington received more than $800 million in public and private grant and contract support for research and training. Since 1969, the University has ranked among the top five institutions in the nation in receipt of federal awards. Since 1974, it has been the number one public university in America in receiving federal support for research and training. Federal agencies provide about 77 percent of the University's grant and contract support.

Research contributes directly to the educational goals of all students, graduate, professional, and undergraduate. The UW is one of a select group of institutions that make special contributions to America by generating the basic knowledge upon which practical innovations are based.

Research at the University forms an important component of the local economy in a variety of disciplines, including engineering, forestry, aerospace, marine sciences, and health sciences. Research-related expenditures also create jobs and stimulate business activity.
