UW tops national primary-care medical school rankings

The University of Washington is No. 1 among primary-care medical schools in the new U.S.News & World Report annual rankings of graduate programs and professional schools.

In the "Best Graduate Schools from U.S.News & World Report" on newsstands April 8, 20 UW programs and specialties are among the top 10 in categories reranked or newly ranked this year. Numerous other UW master's and doctoral programs have been ranked in previous years and are in the book.

The rankings published are based on surveys conducted this year and last.

This is the ninth straight year that the School of Medicine has been named the top primary-care medical school. In the ranking of research medical schools, the UW was No. 10. Academic specialties reranked at the medical school were:

Family Medicine-1st
Rural Medicine-1st
Pediatrics-7th
AIDS-5th
Geriatrics-7th
Internal Medicine-7th
Women's Health-9th

Other top 10 UW graduate programs and academic specialties freshly ranked this year are:

Computer Science-7th
Systems-5th
Artificial Intelligence-7th
Theory-7th

The rankings are established using such measures as statistical analysis of selected academic attributes and surveys of deans and senior faculty at accredited schools in each discipline.
