Vendor showcase planned at botanic gardens

The UW Botanic Gardens Vendor Showcase will be held at from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 21 at the Center for Urban Horticulture. Nearly 50 vendors who have served the gardens rental clients over the years will be on hand.


Cool in a crisis? UW Emergency Management seeks volunteer responders

The UW Emergency Management Office is looking for people — soldiers, not generals — who would be willing to volunteer when the Emergency Operations Center is activated.

520 bridge to be closed Friday night to Monday morning, June 17-20

The State Route 520 floating bridge and highway will be closed from 11 p.m. Friday, June 17, to 5 a.m. Monday, June 20, between Montlake Boulevard in Seattle and Interstate 405 in Bellevue. Night work is planned, and neighbors near the work zone are likely to hear construction noise.

Utility work starting June 13 affects Burke Gilman Trail

During the weeks of June 13 and June 20, Seattle City Light will be performing utility work on utility poles along the UW section of the Burke Gilman Trail near Montlake Boulevard. Trail users should expect delays and detours throughout the two-week period.

Tree donated by grateful patient of UW Regional Heart Center

The young sugar pine, which patient Andrew Russell grew from a fallen cone seed, was planted near the UW Medical Center Surgery Pavilion. Russell hopes its presence will complement the Cardiac Diagnostic Center’s healing spirit.

New design studio in Hutchinson a perfect fit for the School of Drama

What used to be a swimming pool in Hutchinson Hall is now an 8,000-square-foot design studio for the School of Drama. Designers are thrilled to be out of their cramped quarters on University Way. “Its a funny thing,” one said. “You even feel cramped in your ideas when youre in that small a space.”


Art being sought for remodeled Hall Health

When the Hall Health remodel is complete in the fall, the building will feature art by students, faculty and staff. And that art is being solicited now by a committee.


Sound transit looking for artists, holding open houses

A lead artist will be hired for each of the three North Link Sound Transit Stations — Brooklyn (U District), Roosevelt and Northgate, and those chosen will work with architects and engineers to produce works of art. Open houses are slated for the Roosevelt and Brooklyn stations.


Sign a beam and ‘become one with the new HUB

If you miss the HUB during its closure for a major overhaul, staff there would like to get your autograph. On June 1 and 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the campus is invited to sign a beam that will go into the HUB as construction continues.

Since 2004, UW Facilities Services has worked with global positioning systems and geographic information systems to electronically map everything theyre responsible for campuswide.


Where minds meet: UW Bothell opens collaborative spaces in Beardslee Building

The UWB dedicated the collaboratory, a new open working space, on April 22. Its a place for the open exchange of ideas, supported by design and technology, with a focus on the STEM fields — science, technology, engineering and math.

Construction near Savery and Kane: One plaza redone, one road still under way

The renovation of Savery Hall was done in 2009. Now money from that project is paying for a new plaza between Savery and Raitt and a new road between Savery and Kane. The plaza was opened at the beginning of spring quarter, while the road is still under construction.

SR 520 eastbound ramp to Montlake to close temporarily

The off-ramp from eastbound State Route 520 to Montlake Boulevard will close during the early morning hours Saturday, April 9, and Monday, April 11, so crews can deliver and remove equipment for geotechnical drilling work.

Sound Transit: Drilling work to continue through spring break, March 19-27

Sound Transits contractor is continuing to drill holes along the proposed light rail alignment from the UW to Northgate to evaluate soil and groundwater conditions. To minimize its impact, the drilling on campus has been scheduled during spring break.

Construction begins on 15th Avenue NE

The Seattle Department of Transportation is beginning work to reconstruct 15th Avenue NE between NE Pacific Street and NE 55th Street. The roadway will remain open with one lane of traffic in each direction on weekdays.
