Deadlines approach for Awards of Excellence nominations

Do you know an outstanding University of Washington employee, alumnus, student or retiree who contributes to the richness and diversity of the university community? Honor that person with an Awards of Excellence nomination.

Nominations are due beginning in November and continuing in succeeding months for the 2015 University of Washington Awards of Excellence categories. Details of awards and nomination procedures follow.

Alumnus Summa Laude Dignatus Award
The highest honor bestowed upon a UW graduate recognizes an outstanding alumnus or alumna, distinguished for service and achievement over a period of years since graduation. This award is not based on the individual’s work for the preceding year, but rather on his or her lifetime record.

Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award
Given to an individual or group this award recognizes a UW Alumni Association member or volunteer who has made a significant impact on the association. The award recognizes outstanding service or devotion to the UWAA or the UW.

David B. Thorud Leadership Award
Given to one faculty member and one staff member who have demonstrated exceptional abilities to lead, serve, inspire and collaborate with broad impact. The award is named in honor of David B. Thorud, who served the University of Washington in leadership positions for 25 years.

Distinguished Alumni Veteran Award
Recognizes a living UW alumnus or alumna who is a veteran and made a positive impact on the local, national or international community or on the University of Washington or the veteran community.

Distinguished Contributions to Lifelong Learning Award
Honors faculty who have taught or designed courses, seminars or workshops aimed at working adults and other nontraditional students, and who have received excellent teaching evaluations for that work.

Deadline: Typically in Feb.; website will be refreshed shortly. In the interim, nominations can still be submitted using last year’s form.

Distinguished Librarian Award
Recognizes excellence in librarianship, especially as it benefits the academic community through research, teaching, learning and innovative approaches to practice. Additional factors include creativity, leadership, service, scholarship and demonstration of UW values. Any librarian at the university is eligible.

Distinguished Staff Award
Given to individuals or teams of up to eight who have made extraordinary contributions to their departments and the university. Any UW employee in a classified, classified non-union or professional staff position who holds a 50 percent or greater regular appointment and has been employed at the university for at least six months as of the nomination deadline is eligible.

Distinguished Teaching Award
Awarded to faculty who display a mastery of their subject matter, the ability to engage and inspire students within and outside the classroom, and continued innovation in course and curriculum design.

Distinguished Teaching Award for Innovation with Technology
Awarded to a faculty member or team of two to 12 who enhance student engagement and learning by innovatively incorporating technology into teaching.

Excellence in Teaching Award
Awarded to two graduate teaching assistants for their ability to engage students in a variety of classroom settings, their extensive knowledge and mastery of the subject matter and the ability to inspire, guide and mentor students through independent and creative thinking.

Marsha L. Landolt Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award
Recognizes a faculty member who has made outstanding contributions to the education and guidance of graduate students.

Outstanding Public Service Award
Recognizes faculty or staff efforts to improve the quality of people’s lives locally, nationally or internationally. The selection committee considers the nature and extent of the public service activity, the amount of time and effort involved, and the lasting impact it has had.

University Faculty Lecture
Honors current or emeriti faculty whose research, scholarship or art has been widely recognized and whose achievements have had a substantial impact on their profession, on the research or performance of others and perhaps on society as a whole. The honoree delivers a public lecture.
Nomination details: The University Faculty Lecture is administered through the secretary of the faculty office. No deadline information was available.
