UW among top 10 in US News Best Global Universities ranking; No. 2 among US public institutions

The University of Washington climbed to the No. 10 spot on the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities rankings, tied with Johns Hopkins University and Yale University. The UW is now second among American public institutions — an improvement from last year’s No. 3 slot.

“I am proud to see the University of Washington recognized broadly for the impact of the work of our faculty and staff working side by side with our talented students,” UW President Ana Mari Cauce said.

The Best Global Universities methodology – which is based on Web of Science data and metrics provided by Clarivate Analytics InCites – weighs factors that measure a university’s global and regional research reputation and academic research performance. For the overall rankings, this includes bibliometric indicators such as publications, citations and international collaboration. Each subject ranking has its own, similar methodology (see more on UW’s subject rankings below).

The new U.S. News global ranking comes on the heels of several other recent rankings for the UW. Reuters named the UW among the top 10 most innovative universities in the world. The Times Higher Education world university ranking placed the UW at No. 25, fourth among U.S. public institutions, and the 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities from the Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which was released in August and ranked the UW No. 13, and third among U.S. public institutions.
