Eleven UW students and alumni were awarded Fulbright U.S. Student Program scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year, and four have been named as alternates, joining about 1,900 students and recent graduates from around the country to study and teach abroad this coming year.

The program is the largest U.S. international exchange opportunity for students to pursue international graduate study, advanced research and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.

Five UW undergraduate students or recent alumni are among this year’s Fulbright Student Program winners and will travel to countries such as Mexico, Latvia and Kenya to take part in research and teaching assistantships for the academic year.

This year’s undergraduate awardees are Max Carey (’15 linguistics), Benjamin Lee (’15 international studies and Chinese), Sopeck Nop (’16 computer science at UW Tacoma), Alexandra Piunti (Scandinavian studies) and Olivia Smith (sociology).

This year’s graduate-level awardees are Katherine Blank (history), Christopher Diamond (Asian languages and literature), Abbagail Gomez (education), Michael Sims (Near and Middle Eastern studies), Matthew Van Duyn (history) and Joss Whittaker (anthropology). Students will pursue research and teaching in countries such as India, Indonesia, China and Mexico.

Four UW students were named alternates for this year: Kevin Celustka (international studies), Sofiya Idris (’16 societies, ethics and human behavior at UW Bothell), Connor Tsuchida (bioengineering) and Kylie Clay (political science).

For the past several years, the UW has been named a top producer of Fulbright students and scholars, ranked by the Chronicle of Higher Education each February. Last year, 21 UW graduate and undergraduate students received a Fulbright award.
