Arts Roundup: The Silk Road Ensemble, Birds at the Burke – and Double Rainbow All the Way

It’s a busy week for the arts: The Silk Road Ensemble and Mark Morris Dance Group collaborate on a new work at Meany Center; School of Music artist-in-residence Greg Sinibaldi gives the first faculty recital of the school year, and the Burke Museum hosts its annual “Birds at the Burke” day. The Henry Art Gallery presents artwork by American artist Senga Nengudi and the Jacob Lawrence Gallery showcases work by second-year MFA students.

Meany Center for the Performing Arts kicks off its 2016-2017 season with a remarkable new work featuring the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Silk Road Ensemble. This dance and live music production, co-commissioned by Meany Center, tells the ancient Arabian love story of Layla and Majnun and will feature Azerbaijani singers Alim and Fargana Qasimov.  More Info.

Faculty Recital: Greg Sinibaldi, Saxophone
October 6 | Meany Studio Theater
School of Music Jazz Studies artist-in-residence Greg Sinibaldi presents a program of music based on Sylvia Plath’s poem, “Ariel.” In this work, Sinibaldi creates unique sonic textures by combining saxophone with custom Electric Wind Instrument software.  More info.

Birds at the Burke
October 8 | Burke Museum of Natural History & Culture
The Burke Museum invites the public to celebrate all things feathered with a full day of activities. Hundreds of specimens from the Burke’s ornithology collection will be on display and both the Puget Sound Bird Observatory and Seattle Audubon Society will be on hand to provide expert tips for spotting and identifying birds. Senga Nengudi: Improvisational Gestures
Through October 9| Henry Art Gallery
Only three days remain to see a survey of the work of Senga Nengudi, an American artist noted for combining performance art with sculpture. This exhibition, located in the Henry’s Upper Galleries, showcases Nengudi’s work since 1970. More info.
