US Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell to speak at UW’s 141st Commencement Saturday

More than 5,600 graduates, along with 40,000-plus family members, friends, faculty and other observers, are expected to attend the 141st University of Washington commencement ceremonies June 11 at Husky Stadium.

UW President Ana Mari Cauce will preside as more than 12,500 degrees are conferred, including more than 7,700 bachelor’s degrees, more than 3,500 master’s degrees, more than 500 professional degrees, 11 educational specialist degrees and more than 740 doctoral degrees.

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, a 1978 graduate of the UW and a former member of the UW Board of Regents, will be the featured speaker. Jewell was sworn in on April 12, 2013, as the 51st Secretary of the Interior, leading an agency with more than 70,000 employees. Prior to her Interior appointment, Jewell served as president and CEO of REI, having been named to that position in 2005 after five years as the company’s chief operating officer. During that time, Jewell also served on the UW Board of Regents, having been appointed by then-Gov. Gary Locke in October 2001.Graduates begin lining up on the Husky Stadium outdoor practice field at 12:30 p.m., and the academic procession begins at 1:30 p.m. The ceremony is scheduled for three hours.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on UWTV starting at 12:30 p.m. on Comcast Channel 27 throughout the Puget Sound region, and will be streamed live at http://uwtv.org/live. The ceremonies will also be rebroadcast for several weeks following the event (check the UWTV schedule).

Degrees are awarded to those who have completed academic requirements some time during the 2015-2016 academic year.

Members of the Board of Regents, deans and other representatives of the university’s 16 colleges and schools will participate in the ceremony. Many colleges and schools also have separate graduation programs and investiture ceremonies.

UW Tacoma will celebrate its 26th commencement at 9 a.m. Friday, June 10, at the Tacoma Dome. The featured speaker will be Pierce County Superior Court Presiding Judge Frank E. Cuthbertson. More than 1,800 students will receive degrees.

UW Bothell will celebrate its 25th commencement at 1:45 p.m. Sunday, June 12, at Hec Edmundson Pavilion, Alaska Airlines Arena. Author and poet Sherman Alexie will be the keynote speaker. Nearly 1,700 students will receive degrees.
