Arts Roundup: UW Symphony, Béla Fleck – and ‘New Drama’

Music is at the forefront this week: the UW Symphony Orchestra gears up to play alongside guest violinist Glenn Dicterow, the Mallethead series returns with a percussion performance in Meany Studio Theater, and world-famous folk artists Béla Fleck and Abagail Washburn give a concert at Meany Hall. The Henry Art Gallery hosts two public events on Valentine’s Day, and the School of Drama explores the meaning of “new drama” in its annual lecture series.

David Alexander Rahbee conducts the UW Symphony Orchestra and guest violinist Glenn Dicterow in a program of works by Tchaikovsky, Barber and Borodin. The program also includes Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, conducted by Seattle Symphony Music Director Ludovic Morlot. More info.

World-renowned folk artist Béla Fleck returns to the UW World Series with Abigail Washburn for an evening of banjo music and Appalachian sounds in Meany Hall. More info.

Become part of the exhibit as staff from the Henry Art Gallery activate Franz Erhard Walther’s The Body Draws through audience participation. Featuring almost 300 works from the last six decades, this exhibition considers the rich relationship that drawing has had within Walther’s entire production since the late 1950s. More info.

ArtVenture: Valentines to Future Seattle with Shin Yu Pai

Held the second Sunday of every month, ArtVentures encourages families to play, learn and create together. This month, explore the idea of generosity as poet Shin Yu Pai leads the group in creating valentines filled with poetic words. More info.
