Arts Roundup: Drama, Modern Music – and CarolFest

December is off to a busy start for the arts on campus. The School of Drama has two productions running this week, and UW World Series wraps up the calendar year with a performance by acapella ensemble Anonymous 4. The School of Music is brimming with events, from medieval holiday music and CarolFest to modern music, jazz and more.

7:30 p.m., December 4 | Meany Theater
Presented by UW World Series, acclaimed acapella ensemble Anonymous 4 performs at Meany Theater as a part of its farewell tour. This all-female group performs ancient, traditional and modern works from each of its 20 critically acclaimed recordings. More info.

UW Modern Music Ensemble

UW Modern Music Ensemble performs on December 4.

The UW’s Modern Music Ensemble, “Inverted Space,” performs music by Ligeti, Cage and Bartók in its fall quarter concert. More info.

UW Collegium Musicum: Medieval Carols and Motets
7:30 p.m., December 5 | Mary Gates Hall
The UW Collegium Musicum, lead by director JoAnn Taricani, present a program of festive music from medieval France and Germany, plus carols from 18th-century Cornwall. More info.

Schubertiade
4:30 p.m., December 6 | Brechemin Auditorium
Produced by piano professor Robin McCabe, Schubertiade features UW School of Music students performing the works of Franz Schubert. Come at 4 p.m. for a pre-concert lecture by Professor George Bozarth. More info.

Unscripted and full of laughter, “Beginnings: First Breath” runs through December 6.

Members of Jet City Improv work with School of Drama undergraduates to create an ever-changing show. This unscripted ensemble piece is newly created for each performance using suggestions from that evening’s audience. More info.

Studio Jazz Ensemble & Modern Band
7:30 p.m., December 7 | Meany Studio Theater
Two School of Music ensembles come together for this band concert. Hear the Studio Jazz Ensemble perform big band arrangements and the Modern Band perform selections from the outer limits of the genre. More info.

CarolFest

Six UW choral ensembles join together on December 9 for CarolFest — an annual holiday tradition.

This popular holiday tradition features seven conductors, six choral ensembles, five hundred singers, four graduate conductors, three choral faculty, two hours of great music and one impressive grand finale. More info.

Loot
Through December 13 | Meany Studio Theater
The School of Drama’s 75th anniversary season continues with Joe Orton’s 1965 dark farce, “Loot.” This hilarious depiction of a world gone mad follows the McLeavy family as its members deal with the death and burial of the family matriarch. More info.
