Arts Roundup: Jazz, modern dance – and birds at the Burke

There’s something for everyone this week: catch a world premiere at the UW World Series, explore the Burke’s world-renowned collection of birds, or enjoy the sounds of 1962 jazz with the School of Music. The Chamber Dance Company celebrates 25 years with four performances at Meany Hall and the Jacob Lawrence Gallery hosts an exhibition exploring contemporary gun culture and human trafficking.

ETHEL with Special Guest Robert Mirabal Presents: The River
8 p.m., October 8 | Meany Theater
Critically acclaimed string quartet ETHEL continues its six-year collaboration with Native American flutist and two-time Grammy Award winner Robert Mirabal with this world premiere performance. Using rivers as inspiration for collaboration, their music explores water as the embodiment of spirit and its essential role in life on Earth in a cross-cultural concert experience. More info.

Ted Poor Quartet
7:30 p.m., October 15 | Meany Studio Theater
Jazz Studies artist-in-residence and drummer Ted Poor performs a concert devoted to “Our Man in Jazz,” the 1962 album by Sonny Rollins. Poor will be joined on stage by New York-based musicians Bill McHenry, Josh Roseman and Eric Revis – and the evening opens with a set by UW graduate student Gregg Belisle-Chi. More info.

Chamber Dance Company
October 15-18 | Meany Theater
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Chamber Dance Company presents “A Century of Modern Dance.” In four performances at Meany Hall, this ensemble of professional dancers pursuing MFAs in dance at the UW will perform eight works, including Martha Graham’s “Lamentation” and an excerpt from Michel Fokine’s “Petrouchkawith music by Stravinsky. Visit the Jacob Lawrence Gallery in the School of Art building to see “Contentious Products,” an exhibition by Tad Hirsch, assistant professor of interaction design. Comprised of two installations, the exhibition addresses contemporary gun culture and human trafficking. More info.
