Arts Roundup: Drama, music — and the Arty Party

Rounding out this month is a variety of events to keep you entertained. From the Lyon Opera Ballet, Emerson String Quartet and Simone Dinnerstein — all presented by UW World Series — to the annual, family-friendly Arty Party hosted by the Henry Art Gallery, prepare yourself for the rest of spring quarter because it’s looking bright!

The graduation exhibition for the 17 students receiving Bachelor of Fine Art degrees from the Photomedia Program. More info.

Factory Picnic
12 p.m., April 16 | Jacob Lawrence Gallery
Join Scott Lawrimore, gallery director, for a lively, informal research and development group exploring the issues raised by “Factory” programs and exhibitions. Formal readings, special presentations, screenings and activities allow students, faculty, staff and members of the community to share and discuss ideas about labor, leisure, education and art production. This brown bag event is free, open to the public and happens every Wednesday at noon. More info.

Lyon Opera Ballet
8 p.m., April 16-18 | Meany Hall
One of the world’s leading contemporary dance companies, The Lyon Opera Ballet is renowned for its vast repertory of work by emerging and established choreographers. The company returns to Meany Hall with a mixed program: William Forsythe’s “Steptext” (a quartet set to J.S. Bach), “Sunshine” by Emanuel Gat and “Sarabande” by Benjamin Millipied.  More info.

Magna Carta 800: Music of the British Isles
7:30 p.m., April 18 | Mary Gates hall
The UW Collegium Musicum presents a concert commemorating the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta.  The Collegium is  working with the British Library, which is hosting a major exhibition of the Magna Carta, to create a musical piece of a newly discovered poem about the Magna Carta. The poem just went on display at the British Library.  More info.

Arty Party
1 p.m., April 19 | Henry Art Gallery
Spend the afternoon at the Henry for its annual, family-friendly Arty Party.  Go on mini gallery explorations, bring your imagination to life creating with local artists, dance to your favorite tunes, and create memories for the whole family. More info.

UW Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band in “Prized Memories,” April 20, Meany Hall.

Prized: Memories
7:30 p.m., April 20 | Meany Theater
The UW Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Bands perform music by prize-winning composers, including “Funeral Music for Queen Mary,” by Steven Stucky; and “American Scripture,” by Andrew Rindfleisch. More info.

Student Voice Project’s Pop Up Sale
11 a.m.-6 p.m., April 20-21 | Art Building, Rooms 120-122
Join the Student Voice Project for their first Pop Up Sale. Peruse lots of fantastic items on sale, including tee shirts, sweatshirts and aprons, as well as Hello Posters (unique prints by local Seattle artists and designers), and much more. All proceeds benefit the U-District Food Bank. More info.

Emerson String Quartet

For this performance, the quartet plays a newly commissioned string quartet by Lowell Liebermann, as well as leading works from the standard repertoire. More info.

William Inge’s “Bus Stop”
April 22-May 3 | Jones Playhouse
Sixty years after the Broadway premiere of “Bus Stop,” first-year MFA directors Malika Oyetimein and Sean Ryan lead us back to the small town diner 30 miles west of Kansas City where the great American playwright William Inge revealed simple truths of our common humanity. More info.

Simone Dinnerstein

American pianist Simone Dinnerstein is a searching and inventive artist who is motivated by a desire to find the musical core of every work she approaches. More info.
