Super Bowl means seafood bet for UW, University of Massachusetts

UW News

University of Washington and University of Massachusetts have a seafood dinner bet going on Super Bowl 2015The 2015 Super Bowl just got serious, because now it involves a bet over delicious seafood between dining services at the University of Washington and the University of Massachusetts.

UMass threw down the gauntlet, in the form of lobster, and the UW responded with crab. Here’s the bet: If the Seahawks win, UMass will provide a seafood dinner — a clambake of lobster, clams, steamers, corn and Boston cream pie — for eight lucky students in UW housing chosen at random.

In the unlikely event of a Patriots victory, the UW will send dinner for eight — Dungeness crab, shrimp, mussels, clams, garlic potatoes, corn — off to Amherst, Massachusetts. Vendors have agreed to provide the food at no extra expense to the taxpayer. Students in UW housing interested in registering may do so at the HFS Facebook page.

The bet is formally between Storm Hodge, assistant director of UW Housing and Food Services, and Ken Toong, UMass director of auxiliary services, which includes dining, conferences, restaurants and more.

The two respectful rivals offered statements, as opposing coaches might. Toong called the game a “legendary battle” and said the two schools also embody this spirit of competition.

He then doubled-down thusly: “Storm and his team are one of the best in the nation and we gladly take on this wager. We are looking forward to enjoying some of the specialties from Seattle and sharing them with our students. For the record, I think Pats will win by a touchdown. Good luck.”

Hodge replied humbly, calling UMass one of the best university dining programs in the nation: “Like our beloved Seahawks, UW Dining is an underdog. But like the Seahawks we are looking for a little respect! We, the 12s, are excited to be able to participate in the Super Bowl challenge between the schools and create a fun event for our students.” The losing dining director also will have to wear the winning team’s jersey for a day.

Very well then, may the best team clad in blue and green win.
