David Briggs remembrance Aug. 17 at UW
David Briggs, professor emeritus of environmental and forest sciences, will be remembered in a celebration of his life 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 17 at the University of Washington Club. Briggs, 71, died July 26 at his home in Redmond.

Briggs, who taught and conducted research at the UW for three decades until his retirement in 2011, focused on operations research and management science in the forest products industry. Among other things he worked on optimizing the conversion of trees into logs and of logs into lumber and wood products, and on improving quality control and quality management systems in the industry. He was a holder of the Corkery Family Endowed Chair in Forest Resources.
During his time at the UW, he served as director of the Stand Management Cooperative and the Precision Forestry Cooperative, both based at the UW, and also directed the UW site of the National Science Foundation’s Center for Advanced Forestry Systems. The David Briggs Endowed Student Support Fund in Forest Management was launched in 2013, funded primarily by members of the Stand Management Cooperative who wished to honor Briggs’ 15 years as director of the coop.
Briggs’ bachelor degree was from the University of Massachusetts, his master’s from Yale University and his doctorate was in forest resources from the UW.
