Arts Roundup: Music, dance – and ‘The Workroom’

As we head into a long weekend, take the time to indulge in some of the innovative performances and exhibits happening on campus. This week the School of Art opens the MFA + MDes Thesis exhibition, UW World Series presents the collaborative Robert Moses’ Kin and the School of Drama debuts “The Workroom.”

The culminating exhibition for graduating Master of Fine Arts and Master of Design Students.  Pieces in the exhibition are selected with assistance from Jim Rittimann, Henry Art Gallery Head Preparator and Exhibition Designer. More info.

Trio Andromeda
May 25 | Brechemin Auditorium
The winners of the 2013 UW Strings and Piano Chamber Ensemble Competition, performs works by Haydn, Clara Schumann, and Dvorak. Ensemble members are violinist Allion Salvador, cellist Alec Duggan and pianist Li-Cheng Hung. More info.

Desi Dhamaka
May 27 | Meany Theater
Celebrate the largest South Asian cultural show in the Pacific Northwest. This event showcases the talents of the South Asian students at the UW. This year’s show will once again be an array of dance, music and culture. More info.

University Chorale with Michael Brockman
May 28 | Meany Theater
The University Chorale presents “Out of Darkness,” a program of works for classical saxophone and choir, with special guest, faculty saxophonist Michael Brockman. The program features the world premiere of Brockman’s “Eka Satya” for choir, saxophone and cello, and Wyers’ “A Lantern Voice.”  UW graduate student Sonja Mykelbust is the featured cellist. “The Workroom”
May 28-June 9 | Glen Hughes Penthouse Theater
A portrait of two male and six female laborers surviving in Paris after World War II. Little changes in their cramped, airless tailor’s workroom except the fabrics they stitch together. This touching gives UW Professional Actor Training Program students an opportunity to broaden their dramatic acting skills as they relay the emotional story of eight survivors trying to sew together the fragments of their severed post-war lives. Wind Ensemble, Symphonic, and Concert Bands
May 29 | Meany Theater
The UW Wind Ensemble, Symphonic, and Concert Bands perform their year-end concert with works by Cindy McTee, David Maslanka, Claude Debussy, and others. More info.

Robert Moses’ Kin
May 29-31 | Meany Studio Theater
The company’s Seattle debut includes Moses’ Draft, a collaborative work in which Moses and Seattle-area dancers compose the movements. With contrasting bursts of motion, aggressive use of space, and a focus on the expressiveness of the human body, Moses’ choreography shines. More info.

IVA Honors + Juried Show

The graduation exhibition for honors students receiving Bachelor of Art degrees from the Interdisciplinary Visual Arts (IVA) Program as well as selected other students from IVA who have graduated during the year. More info.
