Arts Roundup: Dance, opera – and the University District Street Fair

Dance, opera, exhibition openings and the annual Roethke Reading fill this especially busy week in the arts. From the MFA Dance Concert to School of Music and Pacific MusicWorks’ production of G.F. Handel’s “Semele,” there’s plenty to see and do on the main stages. Also, don’t forget to check out the University District Street Fair, May 17-18, and swing by the ArtsUW booth for some fun prizes!

U-District Street Fair
May 17-18 | 45th Avenue and University Way
Celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the longest running street fair in the country, with local arts and crafts, music and food. Also, stop by the ArtsUW booth and take a spin on their prize wheel for your chance to win prizes. More info.

International Museum Day
May 18 | Henry Art Gallery
Celebrate both International Museum Day and Art Museum Day with free admission to the Henry Art Gallery. Go see their exhibitions and participate in a curator-led tour of “Parallel Practices: Joan Jonas & Gina Pane” at 2 p.m. More info.

UW Opera: G.F. Handel’s ‘Semele”
May 16 – May 18 | Meany Theater
The UW School of Music and Pacific MusicWorks present G. F. Handel’s brilliant English oratorio in a visceral new staging. This opera illuminates the darkly comedic story of a mortal woman’s tryst with a dangerous God. Chaos ensues in the wake of unbridled lust, jealousy and revenge. More info.

Ethnomusicology Concert: Javanese Gamelan Music

Visiting artist Heri Purwanto (gamelan musician) and his students are joined by Ki Midiyanto (shadow puppet master), Jessika Kenney (vocalist), Christina Sunardi (dancer), and Gamelan Pacifica in this evening of Javanese music, dance, and shadow puppet theater. More info.

IVA Honors + Juried Show

Jazz Innovations Part 1 & 2

51st Roethke Reading: Ellen Byrant Voigt
May 22 | Roethke Auditorium (130 Kane Hall)
Professor of creative writing in the Warren Wilson College and former poet laureate of Vermont, Ellen Bryant Voigt has published eight volumes of poetry and two collections of essays. Her two most noted books of poetry are “Shadow of Heaven” and “Messenger: New and Selected Poems 1976-2006,” which was a finalist for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. More info.

“Take Me There: Maps and Books from Old Japan

See books, manuscripts and maps published in Japan’s Tokugawa Period (1603-1868) that came to light and were cataloged during the Tateuchi Retrospective Cataloging project in the East Asia Library. Guided tours will be led by the exhibit curator, Saeko Suzuki. More info.
