Arts Roundup: Exhibits, lectures — and Chris Thile performs at Meany

School has started and this week provides an array of arts events on campus and off, including a performance by mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile and the first lecture in the School of Drama’s performing art lecture series.

“Creating the New Northwest: Selections from the Herb and Lucy Pruzan Collection,” through Oct. 6. The Pruzans, members of the School of Art’s advisory board, have been important regional art collectors and supporters of the arts. This exhibition at the Tacoma Art Museum features more than 100 works by 70 regional artists.

Chris Thile, 7:30 p.m., Oct. 1. Tile, a member of Punch Brothers, is a mandolin virtuoso, composer and vocalist. In this concert he will perform solo violin works on the mandolin by J. S. Bach, as well as his own compositions and contemporary music. Presented in Meany Hall by the UW World Series.

“Theatre and Non-Leftist Radicalism,” 7:30 p.m., Oct. 1. The first in a three-part lecture series focused on the intersections of performance and radical social change, Stefka Mihalova, assistant professor of drama, will explore whether there is a place for non-leftist radical ideas in contemporary theatre. In the Glenn Hughes Penthouse Theatre.

“Women in Control,” Empowering Women through Art and Action series. 6 p.m., Oct. 2. Washington Global Health, PATH and Open Arms lead a discussion on how the ability to control family size and experience safe childbirth enables women to dream, create, and work together to improve their own lives and that of their families and communities.
