Arts Roundup: Student art and a new library exhibit as quarter begins

It’s a slow week in UW arts as the campus awakens to a new year. Still, there are exhibits aplenty to take in, and much more to come.

MFA student exhibit, Jan. 8-19. The School of Art holds an exhibit of art by students in their first quarter of study, in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery. Public reception is 4-7 p.m. Jan. 8, in the gallery.

School of Art book sale, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Jan. 9-10. A sale supporting graduate students in art history. Books on art and many other topics will be available. In the main foyer of the Art Building,

Images of Labor and Social Justice: The Art of Richard V. Correll,” through April 19. A UW Libraries Special Collections exhibit about Correll (1904-1990), “one of the leading masters of printmaking” in the west, whose themes included landscapes, animals and agricultural scenes, harbors and ships, and music and dance as well as political and social issues.

Ongoing at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture:

“Plastics Unwrapped,” through May 27. The Burke takes a look at our relationship with plastics, past and present. “In order to counter the impact of plastic waste, we need to rethink our relationship with plastics,” advance notes for the exhibit say. “Discover how, at ‘Plastics Unwrapped.'” The Burke also will hold “Short Takes on Plastics” on Feb. 5. Now Here is Also Nowhere, Part 1” closes on Jan. 6. “Like a Valentine: The Art of Jeffry Mitchell” runs through Jan. 27. “Collected Stories: Books by Laurie Anderson” runs through Feb. 3. “En plein air” runs through Feb. 16. “Pipilotti Rist: A la belle étoile” runs through March 24.
