There’s a new grocery store on campus — and with that a new deli, bakery, noodle bar and café. It was built to serve students, but is open to everyone.

The new District Market is located in the street level of the new student residence Alder Hall, at the corner of University Way NE and NE Campus Parkway.

Run by UW Housing and Food Services, the market had a limited opening Sept. 4 and will open more officially with a ceremony — and samples, giveaway tote bags and a barbecue — from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22.

District Market offers groceries, fresh produce, meats, seafood, a bakery and a chef station featuring a noodle bar and a rotating menu of hot meals to go. There’s also a full-service deli with entrées, salads and side dishes. The market also hosts Husky Grind, a café with espresso and desserts that has inside seating as well as a walk-up window along Campus Parkway.

The new District Market is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays.

“We have a lot to offer both students and the community,” said Heidi Antush, market manager, standing amid gleaming aisles of produce and packaged foods. “There are not a lot of markets in this area that have everything from cheeses, fresh organic produce, desserts and the ice cream you love to eat.

“Everything in our deli is made here, so we’re going to have pasta salads and veg sides and things in our meat and seafood department that you can take home on your way and make for dinner. We’ll have rotisserie chicken and smoked meats, so I think that really does make us unique.”

Housing and Food Services, a self-sustaining department at the UW, hired 18 employees to run the market.

“We’re here to serve students first and foremost, but this is also open to the community,” said Antush. “We’re really hoping in the next couple of weeks to get the attention of people who happen to live in the area.”

The District Market is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and takes Husky Cards, meal plan accounts, debit/credit cards and cash.
