Arts Roundup: Art, recitals, musical comedy — and choirs combine for 'UW Sings'

There are cool arts events on campus even as the school year draws to a close. The University Symphony features Donna Shin, combined choirs present “UW Sings” and students are featured in music recitals, art exhibits and “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” running through June 3.

So pay no attention to those clouds, breezes and drops of drizzle — summer’s just around the corner. No really!

University Choirs: “UW Sings,” 7:30 p.m., May 31. The University Singers, Womens Choir and Mens Glee Club present their popular year-end concert in Meany Hall. Program highlights include the Women’s Choir performing “Every Time I Feel the Spirit,” with UW instrumentalists; the University Singers performing “Come Travel With Me” and the Men’s Glee Club singing “Ol’ Man River,” by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II. “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” through June 3. The Undergraduate Theater Society presents this popular musical comedy about six young people struggling to find their place in the world despite overbearing parents. In the Hutchinson Hall Cabaret Theater. Tickets are $5-$10.

Exhibit reception: “Landfilled,” 5:30 to 7 p.m., May 31. Celebrating a show of temporary outdoor installations created by Interdisciplinary Visual Arts students taking Art 360, taught by visiting instructor Lauren Grossman. The installation, outside the Center for Urban Horticulture, can be viewed during daylight hours through June 6.

Donna Shin with the University Symphony, 7:30 p.m., June 1. School of Music faculty artist Donna Shin, flute, is the featured soloist with the University Symphony in a performance of “Illapa,” by Gabriela Lena Frank. A tone poem for flute and orchestra composed in 2004, the work depicts a moment in the life of the South American weather god Illapa. Other works on the program include Symphony No. 5, by Piotr Tchaikovsky; and “Sensemayá,” by Silvestre Revueltas. Jonathan Pasternack conducts, in Meany Hall. Tickets are $10-$15. 206-543-4880.

Bachelor of Design exhibit, though June 15. Work by graduating bachelor of design students in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery, and in classrooms and hallways on the second floor of the Art Building. Reception 5-8 p.m. June 6. Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. The Design Division also has a website sharing the work of its graduating students.
