Arts Roundup: ‘Macbeth, Baroque music — and all that jazz

Student talents will be spotlighted this week on UW stages across campus. The Undergraduate Theater Society presents murder and malignant ambition in “Macbeth,” student ensembles perform jazz and Baroque-era music and Interdisciplinary Visual Arts seniors show their work. All that, plus visitor Robert Huw Morgan on the Littlefield Organ.

This Arts Roundup remembers that the witches in “Macbeth” ask, “When shall we three meet again? In thunder, lightning or in rain?” — and totally has its money on rain.

‘Macbeth, Feb. 23-March 4. “Shakespeares gripping story of fear and ambition is given frightening immediacy with original music, dynamic movement and an ensemble of actors that bring gritty life to the violence and intrigue that swirl around the infamous Scottish Thane and his powerful wife,” production notes state. The Undergraduate Theater Society will perform this Shakespeare classic, directed by Julia Sears, in the Hutchinson Cabaret Theater. Tickets are $5-$10.

Interdisciplinary Visual Arts Senior Show, Feb. 25-26, March 3-4. Students set to graduate this year display their work at the Sandpoint Gallery, 7527 63rd Ave. NE, building 5, bay C, second floor. Reception is 6 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 24.

John Patitucci and Marc Seales, 2 p.m., Feb. 26. Three-time Grammy-Award-winning bassist John Patitucci will perform solo classical works for double bass and a set of jazz selections with faculty pianist Marc Seales at Brechemin Auditorium in this installment of the Barry Lieberman and Friends series. Tickets are $15.

Robert Huw Morgan on the Littlefield Organ, 3 p.m., Feb. 26. University organist at Stanford University, Morgan will perform works by Buxtehude, Wynslate, Bach, and others in this program highlighting well-known Baroque and Renaissance composers, held in Kane Halls Walker-Ames Room. Part of the 20th Anniversary Littlefield Organ Series. Tickets are $15.

UW Baroque Ensemble, 7:30 p.m., Feb. 28. UW music students of voice professor Thomas Harper and organ professor Carole Terry perform music from the Baroque era in Brechemin Auditorium, including works by Bach, Telemann and Noferi. Tickets are $5.

Jazz Innovations I and II, Feb. 29, March 1, 7:30 p.m. Student jazz ensembles pay homage to the icons of jazz and break new ground with original progressive jazz compositions in two nights of performance in Brechemin Auditorium. Highlights of the Feb. 29 concert include an appearance by Sarcasm Eel, coached by Marc Seales, performing a set of originals by combo members. Highlights of the Thursday, March 1 concert include a set by Vu-Tang Clan, coached by Coung Vu, performing works by Vu and Chris Speed. Tickets are $5.
