UW second in nation in Peace Corps volunteers

The University of Washington ranked second among large universities in producing volunteers for the Peace Corps in 2011.

In a news release, the Peace Corps reported that UW had 110 volunteers currently serving. The University of Colorado Boulder was No. 1 with 112.

The UW also was second among graduate schools with 24 volunteers, and was third in the number of alumni volunteers since 1961, with 2,738.

The UW ranked third in the number of Peace Corps volunteers in 2010 and has been among the top four among large universities since 2003.

Since President Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961, more than 200,000 Americans have served in 139 host countries. Today, 9,095 volunteers are working with local communities in 75 host countries.
