Arts Roundup: Robin McCabe, Craig Sheppard, the University Symphony, mixed media meets dance at the Henry

A little snow wont slow arts events on campus the week of Jan. 23. Robin McCabe has a solo concert, the University Symphony features Craig Sheppard, “American Knees” hits the big screen and the Henry has a dance/mixed media piece on the nature of tenderness.

“Alice Invents a Little Game and Alice Always Wins,” Undergraduate Theater Society, Jan. 19-29. The student-run UW Undergraduate Theater Society performs Nick Flynns play in the Hutchinson Hall Cabaret Theater. The production is directed by Dylan Ward. “Americanese,” 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24. The film version of UW English Professor Shawn Wongs novel “American Knees” will be shown at the SIFF Cinema Uptown. Wong and director Eric Byler will speak at the screening. (University of Washington Press has rereleased the novel.) Critic Roger Ebert wrote of the film, “I felt like I had wandered into the grown-up cinema.” Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for Seattle International Film SIFF members.

Robin McCabe solo piano recital, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24. Faculty artist Robin McCabe will present a concert of solo works for the piano at Meany Hall, featuring music by Schumann, Liszt and others. Its her first such concert in several years. The New York Times praised her “strong lyric instinct and confidence in its ability to reach and touch the listener,” and The Tokyo Press called her a “pianistic powerhouse.” Tickets are $20, $12 for students and seniors. University Symphony, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26. The symphony, conducted by Jonathan Pasternack and playing at Meany Hall, will perform works by Liszt, Elgar and UW faculty composer Joël-François Durand. Faculty pianist Craig Sheppard will be the featured soloist on “Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2.” Tickets are $15 ($10 for students and seniors). “Eyes of the Skin,” Jan. 26-Feb. 3. The Henry Art Gallery welcomes media artist Maja Petrić (PhD candidate, DXARTS), choreographer, Jennifer Salk (associate professor of dance) and more than 15 dancers to the Stroum Gallery for a 40-minute dance/mixed media installation that delves into the complex nature of tenderness. Its a cross-departmental collaboration that explores concepts of tenderness and fragility with a multi-sensory journey allowing viewers to experience the entire museum in unexpected ways. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Jan. 26, 27, and Feb. 2 and 3, and 2 p.m. Jan. 28, 29 and Feb. 4. Learn more online. Free with museum admission.

“Particles on the Wall” artists reception, 6:30 p.m. Jan. 26. Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility has an art exhibit on display at Odegaard Undergraduate Library thats described by the group as “exploring elements of science and the nuclear age, Hanford history, their thread through our lives and their bearing on the Columbia River and natural world.” The reception is 220 Odegaard, with a reading at 7:30 p.m. The display will be up through March 26.

Limón Dance Company replaces Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba, March 1-3. The UW World Series has announced that performances by Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba scheduled for March 1-3 have been canceled, to be replaced by The Limón Dance Company for the same dates, show times and ticket price. Tickets to the canceled performances will be honored for Limón Dance Company at the door. Ticket holders who prefer not to see Limón Dance Company are asked to contact the UW Arts Ticket Office at 206-543-4880 between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. weekdays to discuss their options.
