Martin Luther King Jr. tributes scheduled at UW Health Sciences and Harborview
The memory of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his enduring contributions to human rights, peace, and social justice will be honored at ceremonies at Harborview Medical Center and jointly at UW Medical Center and UW Health Sciences Center. Service activities in the community also will recall his legacy.
The Percussion Ensemble will perform May 29 in Meany Studio Theater.
All are welcome to attend the UW Health Sciences and UW Medical Center tribute to Dr, King, “Achieving Health Equity Through Non-violent Social Change.” The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 12 in the lobby of the UW Health Sciences Building. The ceremony will feature speakers as well as musical and dance performances, a poetry reading and participatory singing. The 2012 Distinguished Service Award and Community Volunteer Recognition Awards will be presented.
Mary Walls from the Office of Multicultural Affairs, UW School of Medicine, will emcee the event. James Pfeiffer, associate professor of global health, anthropology, and health services will give the keynote address, “Health and the Struggle for Economic Justice: The Legacy of Dr. KIng.” Performers include the Eckstein Middle School Senior Jazz Band, poet Jourdan Keith, singer Christine Edgar, and dancer Etienne Cakpo of the Gansango Music and Dance Group.
UW health sciences students also will participate in a variety of service activities on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, Jan. 16. Service projects will take place at ROOTS, Northwest Harvest, DESC, Project Access NW, and Adult Day Center and many other locations. The students will have a get-together afterward. Monday, Jan. 16
Day of Service
Employee Day of Service at Operation Sack Lunch. Harborview, UW Medical Center, UW Physicians and other UW Medicine employees will partner with Operation Sack Lunch to prepare and serve nutritious meals to the hungry in Seattle. Operation Sack Lunch offers three nutritional meals, seven days per week to people in need.
Tuesday, Jan. 17
Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration at Harborview
The celebration takes place from 11 a.m. to noon at the Harborview Research & Training Building Auditorium. All are invited to attend. “The Right to Dream” will be peformed by a Living Voices Actor. The event also will feature speakers from Harborview, UW Minority Affairs and Diversity, and invited guests. Deborah Horne, executive producer for KIRO-TV, will emcee the program.
“The Right to Dream” recounts the struggle and sacrifice for civil rights in America. The story of a young African American man’s coming of age in Mississippi in the 1950’s and 1960’s illuminates how the fight against prejudice has shaped our country’s history.
Reception
A reception will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at the Research & Training Building rooms 109 and 113 after the celebration. The reception will feature a question and answer session with the Living Voices Actor. A light lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Northwest Harvest food drive begins
A volunteer from Northwest Harvest will be at the Harborview cafeteria from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Donations of non-pershible items are greatly appreciated. Northwest Harvest’s greatest need is peanut butter and baby food. Food donation boxes will be located near the Harborview Cafeteria Espresso Bar, in the Ninth and Jefferson Building lobby, and in the Pat Steel Building lobby. Non-perishable donations need to be dropped off at a campus location by noon, Friday, Jan. 20.

Jefferson Awards for Public Service representative available
Learn more about The 2012 Jefferson Awards for Public Service or nominate your hero by talking to a representative in the Harborview cafeteria from noon to 2 p.m. The Jefferson Awards honors ordinary people who do extraordinary things for others. Five volunteers from Washington state will receive the Washington State Jefferson Award for their outstanding volunteerism. Highlights board on display
A board highlighting the events of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. week and spotlighting Harborview volunteers throughout the year will be on display at the Harborview cafeteria.
