Bothell Education Professor Wayne Au to discuss new book

The UW Center for Multicultural Education will host Wayne Au, assistant professor of education at UW Bothell, who will speak on his new book, Critical Curriculum Studies: Education, Consciousness, and the Politics of Knowing, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 18, in the Petersen Room of Allen Library.

Au will be the 16^th installment in the centers ongoing Book Talk series. The lecture is free and open to the public. In his the book, Au offers a novel framework for thinking about how curriculum relates to students’ understanding of the world around them.

“He brings together curriculum theory, critical educational studies and feminist standpoint theory with practical examples of teaching for social justice to argue for a transformative curriculum that challenges existing inequity in social, educational, and economic relations,” notes from the center state. “Curriculum Studies argues that we must understand the relationship between the curriculum and the types of consciousness we carry out into the world.”

Au also is an editor for the social justice education magazine, Rethinking Schools. His academic interests broadly encompass critical education theory and teaching for social justice. More specifically, his research focuses on educational equity, high-stakes testing, curriculum theory, educational policy studies and social studies education.

The UW Center for Multicultural Education focuses on research projects and activities designed to improve practice related to equity issues, intergroup relations, and the achievement of all students. The Center also engages in services and teaching related to its research mission.
