Nominations sought for Awards of Excellence
Nominations are now being sought for the University’s annual Awards of Excellence that honor outstanding teachers, staff, librarians, mentors and those engaged in leadership and public service. Awards are administered by a variety of groups on campus. Below is a brief description of each award and instructions on how to submit a nomination.
The Excellence in Teaching Award is given to two graduate teaching assistants for their demonstration of extraordinary ability in the teaching and learning process as a graduate teaching assistant.
The S. Sterling Munro Public Service Teaching Award, thanks to a generous gift from the Henry M. Jackson Foundation, is given annually to a UW faculty member who has demonstrated exemplary leadership in community-based instruction, including public service internships and community partnership projects.
To nominate a faculty or staff member or graduate teaching assistant for any of the above awards, please submit an online nomination. Hard copy nominations will not be accepted. The deadline for all submissions is 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12.
Nominations for Distinguished Teaching Awards at Bothell and Tacoma are accepted separately.
Nominations for the UW Bothell Distinguished Teaching Award will be accepted by mail sent to DTA c/o Office of Academic Affairs, Box 358522, or by email (daldrich@uwb.edu) until 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9. An electronic nomination form will be available soon. Details are available online.
Nominations for the UW Tacoma Distinguished Teaching Award are accepted online. The deadline is Monday, Dec. 12.
The Marsha L. Landolt Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award, which is sponsored by The Graduate School with assistance from the Presidents Office, recognizes a faculty member who has made outstanding contributions to the education and guidance of graduate students.
To nominate someone, send a letter of no more than one page to the Landolt Award Selection Committee, c/o graddean@uw.edu. (Hard copy nominations will not be accepted.) Nominators are encouraged to cite specific instances of excellent mentoring. The deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2. Complete details are available online.
The Distinguished Staff Award is given to five individuals or teams who have made extraordinary contributions to their departments and the University. Any staff member who has been employed at least 50 percent time for at least six months is eligible to be nominated.
To nominate someone, write a letter citing the persons contributions to the University and solicit three letters of support from others who know the nominees work. Nomination materials should be submitted online. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Dec. 16.
The David B. Thorud Leadership Award is given to one faculty member and one staff member who have demonstrated exceptional abilities to lead, serve, inspire and collaborate with broad impact. The award is named in honor of David B. Thorud, who served the University in leadership positions for 25 years.
To nominate someone for this award, submit the nomination form online. (Senior administrators to the level of associate dean, vice provost, vice president, and vice chancellor are not eligible to be nominated.) The deadline is Friday, Dec. 2.
The Distinguished Librarian Award recognizes excellence in librarianship, especially as it benefits the academic community through innovative approaches to practice, research, teaching and learning. Additional factors include creativity, leadership, service, scholarship and demonstration of UW values.
Any librarian at the University is eligible for the award. Nominators should submit a completed nomination form and a letter of nomination (two pages maximum) online. The Selection Committee asks nominees for their CVs and the names of up to three people who could serve as references. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Dec. 16.
The Outstanding Public Service Award recognizes faculty or staff efforts to improve the quality of people’s lives locally, nationally or internationally. The selection committee considers the nature and extent of the public service activity, the amount of time and effort involved, and the lasting impact it has had.
To nominate someone for the award, send a letter of no more than two pages including a description of the nature, extent and impact of the service, how long it lasted and whether the nominee received any compensation for it. Nominations should be sent to the Outstanding Public Service Award Committee, Box 351241, or by e-mail to Gus Kravas, gkravas@u.washington.edu. The deadline is Friday, Jan. 20, 2012.
The Distinguished Contributions to Lifelong Learning Award honors faculty who have taught or designed courses, seminars or workshops aimed at working adults and other nontraditional students, and who have received excellent teaching evaluations for that work.
To nominate someone for this reward, send a cover letter that describes the number of students served, the length of time the faculty member has participated in lifelong learning activities, and the creativity and innovative nature of these lifelong learning programs. Attach a list of the courses taught and student evaluations in a form that can be compared to a standard UW evaluation form. Nominations should be sent to Dave Szatmary, Box 359492. Or e-mail the material to dszatmary@extn.washington.edu. The deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012.
The University Faculty Lecture honors current or emeriti faculty whose research, scholarship or art has been widely recognized by their peers and whose achievements have had a substantial impact on their profession, on the research or performance of others and perhaps on society as a whole. The honoree delivers a lecture that is open to the public.
The University Faculty Lecture is administered through the office of the Secretary of the Faculty. The deadline has not yet been established.
Even as the current UW faculty and staff who deserve honors are being sought, the Alumni Association is looking for former students for its annual Alumnus Summa Laude Dignatus Award. The honor is presented to an alumnus or alumna who has distinguished themselves over a period of years since their graduation from the UW. The award is based on the individuals lifetime record, not simply the work done the preceding year. Nominees must be known for their support of the UW, have received national or international stature, and they must be able to
come to the UW to receive the recognition.
Details on the nomination procedure are available online. The UW Alumni Association will no longer be accepting paper copies of ASLD nominations. The nomination deadline is Tuesday Jan. 31, 2012.
The award winners will be announced in spring. They will be honored at the annual Awards of Excellence Recognition Ceremony, scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Thursday, June 7, in Meany Hall.
