New C4C lecture series showcases UW faculty succeeding in commercialization

The UW Center for Commercialization — C4C, for short — is launching a six-lecture series this fall about merging academic research with entrepreneurship, designed to inspire UW students and faculty to pursue commercialization.

Its called the 2011 Presidential Entrepreneurial Faculty Fellows, and will run on selected Tuesdays from Sept. 13 to Nov. 29.

The series will showcase UW faculty who have succeeded in translating their research into products and therapies, who have initiated groundbreaking programs for translation, or who have established model collaborations with industry.

The lectures are presented in partnership with the Office of the President and the Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship at the Foster School of Business. Space is limited for these free lectures and advance registration is requested at www.uwc4c.com/lectures. Theyre morning lectures, so coffee and breakfast treats will be provided.

The first lecture, on Sept. 13, was Oren Etzioni, professor of computer science and engineering, whose lecture was titled “All You Need is Love: Starting a Company UW at UW in 10 Easy Steps.”

Subsequent lectures in the series are:

Sept. 27: Vikram Jandhyala, electrical engineering: “Avoiding Pitfalls & Crossing Chasms: 10 Things Not to Do When Creating a Tech Start-up from University Research.” 10 a.m., 291 Paccar Hall.

Oct. 4: Rodney Ho,  pharmaceutics: “High on UW Start-ups: Fueling Innovations in a New Climate of Entrepreneurship.” 8 a.m., Walker-Ames Room, Kane Hall.

Oct. 18: Joel Durand, music: “Bridging a High-end Audiophile Product to Market: The Talea.” 8 a.m., Walker-Ames Room, Kane Hall.

Nov. 8: Buddy Ratner, bioengineering & chemical engineering: “An Academic in Entrepreneurship Land: 10 Lessons Learned, Some from the Mad Hatter and March Hare.” 10 a.m., Walker-Ames Room, Kane Hall.

Nov. 29: Carla Grandori, pharmacology: “Cures for Cancer — Hidden in Plain Sight? An Enterprise to Accelerate their Discovery.” 8 a.m. Walker-Ames Room, Kane Hall.
