The School of Music will offer two musical evenings of different types and in different locations, both on Thursday Aug. 18.

The UW Summer Concert Band will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. that day on the plaza outside Meany Hall. And the University Summer Chorale will perform an innovative new piece at 7:30 p.m. at University Lutheran Church, 1604 50th St. NE.

The Summer Concert Band will be conducted by graduate student Erin Bodnar. If the weather is poor, the event will move to Meanys Room 268.

The summer concert program will include:

Handel in the Strand, by Percy Grainger
Somerset Rhapsody, by Ralph Vaughan Williams
Shenandoah, by Frank Ticheli
Incidental Suite, by Clifton Williams, and
Early Light, by Carolyn Bremer.

The University Summer Chorale, conducted by graduate student Jeremiah Selvey, will perform a piece titled Never Again.

In press notes, Selvey describes the piece as “a re-contextualized dramatic presentation of opera, musical theater and oratorio exerpts.” Its the story, the notes state, of a woman who, having loved once, has another opportunity for love in her life. The notes ask, will love once more, or say “never again”?

The evening will feature musical accompaniment by Melissa Thorne and solo performances by sopranos Tess Altiveros and Sylvia Baba, tenor Anthony Kalil and baritone Isaiah Lin.

Selvey wrote of Never Again that “the storyline itself, the script, the acting, the dancing, the choreography, the arrangement/order of the production — is the direct result of a dynamic collaborative process on the part of every person in the UW Summer Chorale and a world premiere production.”

The suggested donation for admission to Never Again is $8 per person or $20 per family. Tickets are available online. Learn more about this production on its Facebook page.
