Grant proposals sought
The Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute invites applications from University of Washington researchers for its Small Grants research awards. Proposed research must be in alcohol or drug abuse-related fields. The maximum amount considered for funding is $30,000 for faculty and research scientists. The funding limit for predoctoral students and postdoctoral fellows is $20,000.
The next application deadline is 5 p.m., October 17, 2011. Questions concerning the application process or suitability of a potential project should be directed to the Institute at 206-543-0937. Prospective nonsmokers wanted for study
Study volunteers needed: Do you want to quit smoking? Adults smokers who want to kick the habit have until Aug. 31 to see if they are eligible to enroll in WebQuit, a free online smoking-cessation study being conducted by Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
The study, funded by the Hutchinson Center, will compare the effectiveness of two online smoking-cessation programs with a goal of creating more effective online programs in the future. Participants will learn new tools for dealing more effectively with urges to smoke. They also will receive step-by-step quit guides and create personalized plans for staying smoke-free.
Eligible participants must be 18 or older, a current U.S. resident, someone who has smoked daily for a least the past year; someone who wants to quit smoking in the next 30 days; willing and able to read and write English; able to connect to the Internet and use a website for at least one hour per week for three consecutive months; not participating in other smoking-cessation interventions; willing and able to complete a baseline survey; and willing to be randomly assigned to either online program.
