HEAD TO HARVARD: Alison J. Head, a research scientist in the Information School, has been awarded a joint fellowship for next year at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard and the Harvard Libraries Innovation Laboratory. She will research what happens to the information strategies of todays college students once they graduate. Head will also work with a small group of software developers at Harvard Law School to make libraries more valuable to users. Head co-directs Project Information Literacy with Michael Eisenberg, professor and dean emeritus in the Information School. As an ongoing study, the project investigates how young adults gather research information in the digital age.

KRASHAN CASH: The Grand Gala in Honor of retiring UW World Series Director Matt Krashan, held June 23 at Meany Hall, was a sold-out affair, with 100 guests celebrating Krashans legacy of artistic and educational excellence. Together, guests raised $40,000 toward the Matt Krashan Endowed Fund for Artistic and Educational Excellence in the Performing Arts and helped the World Series reach its total campaign goal of $200,000.

HUMBOLDT HONOR: Jon Wellner, UW professor of statistics, received a Humboldt Research Award from the Germany-based Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The award, which is valued at $60,000 Euros, recognizes lifetime achievements in research, and recipients are invited to carry out projects in cooperation with specialist colleagues in Germany. The Humboldt Foundation grants up to 100 Humboldt Research Awards annually.

GOULD AWARD: Mark Zachry, professor of Human Centered Design & Engineering, received the 2011 Jay R. Gould Award for Excellence in Teaching Technical Communication, for teaching excellence among post-secondary educators. The award recognizes achievements such as mentoring, a record of successful students, and creativity and innovation in the classroom. Zachry accepted the award in Sacramento at the Technical Communication Summit.

HONORED IN BRAZIL: The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Circuits and Systems Society has named David Allstot, professor of electrical engineering, recipient of the Mac Van Valkenburg Award, recognizing outstanding research contributions and technical leadership. UW electrical engineering professor Mani Soma, the current president of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, presented the award in Brazil at the societys annual meeting.
