Thomas Harper directs students for Opera Workshop

Thomas Harper directs UW voice students in scenes from the opera repertoire, including scenes from Carmen, Idomeneo, Zauberfloete, L’Elisir d’Amore, and Le Nozze di Figaro.

Its the Opera Workshop, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 3, in Meany Studio Theater.

The program will include:

  • Carmen: Card-trio
  • Idomeneo: Quartet from second act
  • Zauberfloete: Quintet Act I
  • L’Elisir d’Amore: Sextet Act II
  • Le Nozze di Figaro: Second Act Finale

Harper came to the UW in 1998. He has sung in Europe for more than 25 years, performing in many opera houses and concert halls in Italy, Switzerland, and Germany, including Deutsche Oper Berlin, Hamburg State Opera, Alto Theater Essen, RAI Torino, and Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Geneva.

His repertoire includes over 50 roles, ranging Hansel and Gretel. Harper won enthusiastic praise for his recording of the role of Fritz in Schreker’s Der Ferne Klang and for his American debut as Mime in Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen with the Seattle Opera. He may be heard on the Naxos label singing famous Italian arias and Mahler’s Lied von der Erde.
