School of Music presents Jazz Innovations I and II
Student jazz ensembles coached by Marc Seales, Cuong Vu, Tom Collier and Steve Korn will perform Jazz Innovations I and II at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, May 18 and 19, in Brechemin Auditorium.
The ensembles will pay homage to the icons of jazz and break new ground with original progressive jazz compositions.
The May 18 concert will include the Gus Carns Group, coached by Seales, playting “Vertigo,” by Bryan Van Pelt; “in-between-ness” by Carmen Rothwell; “Salmiak,” by Evan Woodle and “Waterlines,” by Carns. Performers are Evan Woodle, drums; Gus Carns, piano; Carmen Rothwell, bass; and Bryan Van Pelt, tenor saxophone. Also performing will be Five Loko, coached by Tom Collier, with performers Eric Vanderbilt-Mathews, alto sax; Sam Hylton, piano; Andy Short, electric guitar; James Prow, electric bass; and Dan O’Neil, drums.
The May 19 concert will include the group Luke Bergmans Shaved Beard, coached by Steve Korn. The group will perform “Now” by John Patitucci; “Rumples” by Adam Rogers; “Let It Go” by Josh Nelson and “Giant Chipotle Burrito” by Sam Wallen. Performers are Eric Vanderbilt-Mathews, alto sax; Sam Hylton, piano; Andy Short, electric guitar; James Prow, electric bass; and Dan O’Neil, drums.
The group Aphid, coached by Cuong Vu, also will perform. Players are Brennan Carter, trumpet; Levi Gillis, tenor sax; Colin Pulkrabek, trombone; Mark Hunter, bass; Jarred Katz, drums; and Cameron Sharif, piano. A group called Ensemble Three, coached by Tom Collier, also will perform.
