Next up for drama: ‘Picasso at the Lapin Agile
The UW School of Drama will present Picasso at the Lapin Agile, by Steve Martin, May 15-29 at the Penthouse Theater.
In the play, artist Pablo Picasso and scientist Albert Einstein meet at a Paris bar, the Lapin Agile (Nimble Rabbit), in 1904. At the time, both are young and not yet famous. Einstein will propose his theory of special relativity in 1905 and Picasso will paint Les Demoiselles dAvigon in 1907.
“The horrors of the twentieth century are in direct proportion to the magnificence of all we learned about the universe, and ourselves,” said director Andrew McGinn. “Steve Martin’s ability to balance the wacky and the fascinating with complete earnestness allows us to celebrate these century-old breakthroughs in art, mathematics, perception, and consciousness. These revelations still give us all the chills because theyre so improbable and elegant. Celebrating the breakthroughs, I think, plays a major part in loving our world and moving humanely forward.”
The play features students in the Professional Actor Training Program and undergraduate actors. Director McGinn is an MFA candidate in directing.
Tickets for Picasso at the Lapin Agile are $10 for previews (May 15 and 17), $15 for Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays and $17 for Fridays and Saturdays.
