Leading scholar in American Jewish Studies to speak at UW
Jonathan Sarna, a Brandeis University professor long known for his work on American Jewish history, will deliver the 36th annual Samuel & Althea Stroum lectures in Jewish Studies on Monday, May 9, and Wednesday, May 11.
In his initial lecture, Sarna will speak on “The Shaping of American Judaism.” In the second, he will focus on “The Reshaping of American Judaism.” The talks begin at 7:30 each evening in 220 Kane.

Sarna is the Joseph H. & Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History at Brandeis and director of its Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program. The Forward, a national weekly which publishes news about Jews and Judaism, named Sarna one of its 50 most influential American Jews in 2004. The same year, Sarna was also chief historian for the celebration of 350 years of Jews in America.
On the first evening of the lectures, the Stroum Jewish Studies Program, which sponsors the series, will present a tribute to Althea Stroum, who died in March.
