MICROBIOLOGY MERIT: The American Academy of Microbiology has elected Professor of Oceanography E. Virginia Armbrust, to Fellowship.  Fellows of the American Academy of Microbiology are elected annually through a highly selective, peer-reviewed process, based on their records of scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology. There are now more than 2,500 Fellows representing all subspecialties of microbiology, including basic and applied research, teaching, public health, industry, and government service. Armbrust is one of 78 new Fellows selected this year.

 

 

ACCOUNTING ACCOLADES: Senior Lecturer in Business Deborah Medlar was appointed regional director for the western and northwest regions of the accounting honorary Beta Alpha Psi, effective in August. The region includes a total of 43 chapters.

SERVICE LEARNING STAR: Jeff  Hou, an associate professor who chairs the Department of Landscape Architecture, has received the Award for Excellence in Service-Learning Education from the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture. A member of the landscape architecture department since 2001, Hou focuses on marginalized communities. He has worked with farmers, indigenous tribes, and fishers in Taiwan, villagers in China and inner-city immigrants in the United States. Projects have ranged from a childrens park in Seattles International District to the rebuilding of an ethnic minority village in China following the 2008 earthquake.

 

POETRY EXTRA: When guitarist, vocalist, and composer Amancio Prada performs at Meany on April 30, attendees will receive a special booklet printed just for this event. Thats because the concert focuses on the poems of Federico Garcia Lorca set to music. The booklets will contain the Spanish poems/songs set alongside English translations. The translations were provided by the UW students of Spanish 408. Heres a sample of one poem/song, translated by Alicia Flint, Jourdan Fluke, Kristin Johnson, Kaitlin McCloskey, Caitlin Paige and Christine Young:
