You might notice something unusual about the UW Tower on April 1 and 2. Blue lights will illuminate the top floor of the 22-story building on the Seattle campus.

Its part of the “Light It Up Blue” autism awareness campaign, and the UW Autism Center has planned a series of events aimed to promote awareness and provide information for families, educators and clinicians.

“These events are a great way for families to interact with our terrific clinicians and researchers, to get practical tips that can be used at home and to learn about the latest scientific discoveries in the world of autism,” said Wendy Stone, director of the UW Autism Center.

The free activities and information sessions will be held throughout April in Seattle and Tacoma. Free childcare is available with advance registration.

The events in Seattle include sessions on improving communication skills and healthy-eating in children with the disorder as well as stress-relieving tips for caretakers. Learn from an expert in special education about what to look for in school programs for children with autism spectrum disorders. And, a pediatric neurologist will discuss brain causes of autism and autism-linked seizures.

In Tacoma, clinicians will talk about strategies for handling everyday behavior issues that are often seen at different ages.
