CANCER RESEARCH: Two UW students are being honored by the American Association for Cancer Research. Benjamin W. Dulken is one of 27 recipients of the AACR-Thomas J. Bardos Science Education Award for Undergraduate Students, which is given to inspire science students at the undergraduate level to enter the field of cancer research. And Matthew P. Banegas is one of 50 recipients of Minority Scholar in Cancer Research Awards, created to enhance the education and training of minority researchers and increase the visibility and recognition of minorities involved in cancer research.

THOUGHT LEADER: Meredith Honig, associate professor in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies, was honored as a “thought leader” by the American Association of School Administrators. Thought leaders are “exemplary speakers brought to the National Conference on Education to discuss critical issues that affect students, leaders, communities and school systems. In Thought Leader sessions, speakers will evaluate how global, national and state issues will affect your schools and communities.”

WORLD LANGUAGES DAY: About 20 faculty, staff and graduate students were among the presenters for this years World Languages Day, held in various locations across the Seattle UW campus on Friday, March 4. Held annually by UW Educational Outreach, the event brings up to 1,400 high school students and scores of teachers to the UW Seattle campus for a variety of classes, workshops and more on world culture, history, music, cuisine, art and language. The students discussed German pop culture and even played Jeopardy in German; took a culinary tour of Spain, learned about Swahili language and culture, took in a bit of Russian, Korean and Chinese, and even got a primer in American Sign Language and a lot more.
