On Edible Bottles, Drinkable Pumpkins, & Breathable Iodine: Mixing Culture, Science and Commercial Markets for Sustainable Global Health Technology Development is the title of this years Rushmer Lecture by David A. Edwards, the Gordon McKay Professor of the Practice of Biomedical Engineering at the Wyss Institute for Biologically-Inspired Engineering at Harvard University.

Edwards will be speaking from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Friday, March 25, in Hogness Auditorium, A-420 Health Sciences Center.  A reception will follow in the Foege Buildings North Lobby.

Edwards combines the logic of science with the creativity of art to develop technological advances, design solutions, and arts partnerships. His scientific research concerns the mathematical design of novel physical parameters that allow nanostructured materials to efficiently deliver drugs and vaccines to the lungs and other human organs, with a special focus on infectious diseases in developing world nations. He founded and directs Le Laboratoire in Paris.  His laboratory is developing new antibiotic therapies for tuberculosis and a new delivery platform for needle-free childhood vaccines.
