Overcome writer's block at March 3 Career Development Seminar

UW Health Sciences/UW Medicine

Learn to overcome writer's block at a March 3 seminar

The talk will take place from 4 to 5 p.m., Thursday, March 3, in Brotman Auditorium, UW Medicine South Lake Union. The presentation is free and open to researchers in all fields.

The speaker will be Dr. David Pierson, UW professor of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Pierson has extensive experience writing and reviewing research manuscripts, and has served as editor-in-chief of a peer-reviewed journal.

Pierson lectures frequently on how investigators can overcome writer’s block and increase their manuscripts’ chances of being accepted for publication.

Acknowledging that scientific writing comes more easily to some people than to others, this presentation will offer practical tips for moving from abstract writing and poster presentations to successfully completing and submitting a full manuscript.

Pierson will offer general advice about writing, as well as specific tips for preparing each section of a research paper: introduction, methods, results and discussion. There will also be suggestions for creating more effective figures and tables.

Along with explaining what happens to a manuscript after it is submitted, and how best to respond to reviewers’ comments, Pierson will also present a practical, step-by step approach to overcoming writer’s block. The advice may prove especially useful for researchers without extensive experience in authoring papers.

Light refreshments will be provided. UW Medicine South Lake Union is located at 815 Mercer St. A free shuttle runs from the UW and from Harborview to UW Medicine South Lake Union.
