UCLAs Tyrone Howard to speak at Suzzallo Library March 4

Tyrone Howard, associate professor of education at the University of California, Los Angeles, will give a free talk from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 4, in the Petersen Room of  Suzzallo Library.

Howard, who is an alumnus of the UW College of Education, will discuss his new book, Why Race and Culture Matter in Schools: Closing the Achievement Gap in Americas Classrooms.  A book signing will follow.

Notes for the presentation state, “Building on the work of three studies that investigated schools that were successful in closing the achievement gap, Howard shows how a greater awareness and a comprehensive understanding of race and culture can improve educational outcomes.”

Howard also is director of UCLAs Center X, which provides graduate credential programs and professional development initiatives as it seeks to “transform public schooling to create a more just, equitable and humane society.”

The event is sponsored by the College of Educations Center for Multicultural Education as the 15th entry in its ongoing Book Talk series. The talk is open to all, though RSVPs are requested; e-mail centerme@uw.edu or call 206-543-3386.
