School of Music presents new works and international performers Feb. 14

The School of Music will present an evening of new works performed by internationally renowned visiting artists in the Contemporary Group concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, in Meany Hall.

Works on the program include the premiere of a music-only version of Idioms, a piece of experimental musical theater combining experimental Western music and traditional Vietnamese music. Idioms was, created by School of Music composer Richard Karpen in dialogue with the musicians of the Six Tones (Swedish guitarist Stefan Östersjö and Vietnamese musicians Nguyen Thanh Thuy and Ho Hoai Anh) and programmer Josh Parmenter from the Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media.

Garth Knox lives in Paris, and plays recitals, concertos and chamber music concerts all over Europe, the United States and Japan. Nguyen Thanh Thuy holds a teaching position at the Hanoi National Conservatory of Music and has performed and recorded internationally. Ho Hoai Anh has performed with orchestras in Europe, Japan and America.Stefan Östersjö is one of the most prominent soloists in new music in Sweden, and has recorded and toured extensively.

For the second half of the concert, Knox will join the Six Tones, Karpen and Parmenter to perform collaboratively composed and improvised music for viola d’amore, dan trahn, dan bau, guitars, and live electronics.

Knox also will lead a master class with students of Melia Watras, at 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 11, in Brechemin Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.
