PLANNING FOR LITERACY: Eliza T. Dresang, the Beverly Cleary Professor for Children and Youth Services at the UWs Information School, is serving on the Washington State Birth-to-12 Literacy Team.  The team consists of 25 literacy educators and community members who have a high level of expertise in literacy and who represent the diversity of the state.  This team, appointed by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and supported by “Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Plan,” a formula grant from the U.S. Department of Education, are working on a statewide birth-to-12 comprehensive literacy plan. Members are appointed to the team for a two year term to assist with both development and implementation of the Literacy Plan.

GEOPHYSICAL FELLOW: Eric D’Asaro, principal oceanographer with the Applied Physics Laboratory and professor of oceanography, has been named a fellow of the American Geophysical Union for his contributions to physical oceanography and especially for the development and uses of Lagrangian floats.

EXEMPLARY WRITER: Law school reference librarian Mary Whisners article Enact Locally was selected in the Exemplary Legal Writing—Short Articles category of the 2011 Green Bag Almanac and Reader (pdf). The publication is dubbed “an almanac of useful and entertaining tidbits for lawyers for the year to come.” Renowned journalists Nina Totenburg (NPR), Adam Liptak (NYT), and Tony Mauro (NLJ) were among the judges.

SUPREME COURT HONOR: The Supreme Court Fellows Alumni Association presented its Administration of Justice Award to Law Professor Ronald K.L. Collins in recognition of his scholarly and professional achievements in advancing the rule of law.
