Violence Prevention Training workshops offered Feb. 3, March 9

People who become violent often show signs beforehand. Theyre called “pre-incident indicators,” says Gillian Wickwire, response specialist for the UWs Violence Prevention and Response Program.

You need look no further than the evening news to see that its good to know these signs, and how to respond.

The warning signs, together with information about UW resources for safety and counseling and much more, will be discussed at two Violence Prevention Training workshops offered by SafeCampus, the UWs violence prevention program.

The sessions are free but advance registration is requested. The sessions will be held:

  • 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, in Odegaard Undergraduate Library, and
  • 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, at Health Sciences.

“Our goal is to get people to look at these signs and notice them as something that should be reported — and to report them to Safe Campus,” Wickwire said. Phone lines for all three campuses, plus Harborview Medical Center, ring to the Seattle office and its usually Wickwire herself who takes the calls. The calls are not confidential, “but we operate on a need-to-know basis,” she said. “We work with students, staff and faculty — people can call us about things going on in their own homes or communities.”

The SafeCampus office numbers are:

  • For the Seattle campus: 206-685-SAFE (7233)
  • UW Bothell: 425-352-7233
  • UW Tacoma: 253-692-7233.
