When the University Symphony performs on Jan. 27, it will be a chance for the winners of the School of Musics annual Concerto Competition to show off what they can do. David Brooks, piano; Yesol Im, violin; Jae-In Shin, violin; and Brooks Tran, piano, won the opportunity after surviving two rounds of competition. Alternates Hunju Juno Lee and Maria-Alise Agrawal, both flutists, will also perform.

For the competition, each student prepares a 15-minute piece of music.  Since concertos can run anywhere from 25 to 50 minutes, no one is playing a full concerto. Students consult with their teachers to choose, and if necessary, cut the music. The preliminary round of the competition is judged by UW music professors; the final round is judged by outside musicians. The winners play a solo at the UW Symphony concert.

At the concert, Brooks will play Piano Concerto #4 in D Minor, Op. 70, by Anton Rubinstein; Im will play Concerto for Violin, Op. 14 by Samuel Barber; Shin will play Violin Concerto in D Minor, Op. 47 by Jean Sibelius; Tran will play Piano Concerto #1 in G Minor, Op. 25 by Felix Mendelssohn; Lee will play Concerto for Flute and Orchestra by Aram Khachuturian; and Agrawal will play Concerto for Flute and Orchestra by Jacques Ibert.

The orchestra will be conducted by Jonathan Pasternack.

The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, in Meany Theater. Tickets are $10, and can be purchased online or at the UW Arts Ticket Office, 206-543-4880.
