CULTURE QUEEN: When Seattles City Arts magazine decided to make a list of 50 “culture makers,” the UWs own Sarah Nash Gates was one of the people they chose. City Arts called the list its version of a power list. “These arent necessarily the people running the show, but they are the ones who, as far as we can tell, are making the tough decisions about who gets to take the stage at that show,” the magazine said. Heres what they had to say about Gates, who is the executive director of the School of Drama:

“For seventeen years, Sarah Nash Gates has been teaching, designing, problem-solving and fundraising for the University of Washington School of Drama. One of the founding board members of Theatre Puget Sound, Gates has poured her energy into connecting the university theater program with the professional world, helping to create an honorary advisory board composed of managing and artistic directors from around town. From attending parking regulation meetings on campus to serving as president for both the United States Institute of Technology and the University Resident Theatre Association, Gates is a prominent driving force behind the scenes of the theater community.”

GREENER CLEANERS: For the second time, the UWs Custodial Services has won the American School and University magazines top award for green cleaning. The UW is the co-grand award winner in the higher education category, and thats the first time such a repeat has happened in the history of the competition.

“Facilities Services at the University of Washington takes green cleaning seriously when selecting equipment and instituting best practices within the industry,” the article in the magazine said.

Scott Spencer, assistant direct of Facilities Services for Custodial Services, said, “Neither our 2007 nor 2010 award would have been possible without the foresight and focus demonstrated by Director Gene Woodard years ago, when he placed Custodial Services steadily on the path toward Green Cleaning and Sustainability years before it became a University-wide institutional goal.” Custodial Services green cleaning activities were reported in University Week in 2007 and again in 2010.
